I don’t harangue people to subscribe, as then it would feel too much like a job, and serving those worthy subscribers. Of course, we all need money, but I try to earn a few quid through ko-fi.com donations from kind readers rather than relying on paid subscriptions. While I write for fun and through passion, I’d love it to be my full time thing, but I know, like you, I’d hate the roller coaster/ pressure and feelings that might induce. Go and do what you need to do! Your loyal readership will remain so!
You’re one of the few emails I always open and read. It feels easy to connect with you because of your genuine, artful, and loving approach without the over-performative-ness of today. Congrats on keeping it going and refocusing on your love of writing, sharing, and connecting with those you align with outside the home. What a beautiful evolution in this point of your career! Excited to hear how it unfolds 💜
You write so well & you are your own self & I wish you all the best of things & places & tasks that make you happy- I will be here lurking & checking up on you - I have daughters your age & as my own mother used to say to her 3 daughters… Bless Your Baby Heart🥰
Hi Lauren, thanks for your honesty and yes, I totally understand how you feel. At 71, I am the analog queen. Never had passion for technology even though as you say, we need it today to do so much in our lives. I’ve gone from being such an extrovert as a young woman to a much more comfortable introvert as I get older. What you want to do sounds awesome, I give you kudos for moving in a new direction. I just signed up for Dr. B’s new master class! His first was where I came to know about you and your delicious recipes. I have made many over the years plus others from books you have recommended. (that Italian apple cake…fantastic!) I’ve been vegan for 7.5 years and I count that as one of the most important decisions of my life. Not everyone around me is which can be challenging at times. I am actually in Sicily for a month right now. My husband was born here but we live in California the rest of the year. I have no problem finding amazing vegan food here! I will keep reading your newsletter as long as you keep publishing!! Take good care, Victoria
Thank you so much Victoria and I'm glad that my work with Dr. B connected us! So happy to hear that you're continuing to enjoy the recipes and the plant-based life :) Enjoy Sicily - sounds like a dream!!!
I hate to hear how the way Substack has evolved (which I wholeheartedly agree is exhausting!) has taken a toll on you. I’m sorry. 🙏 Yes to focusing on your creative expression and writing in a way that feels joyful and low-pressure for you!! I try to focus on the impact a post has on the readers I have versus reaching new readers, that shift has been really helpful to me. The notes thing is truly 🤪🤪🤪. I will go days without sharing anything there and then feel a sense of panic which is truly ridiculous. Of course Substack wants us on there constantly- it wants its readers and writers engaging as much as possible because we are both mechanisms in the attention economy. 😩 But you’re on the right path— focus on what brings you joy about creating, doing it for you and your creative expression and the connections you get to make with the readers already here. 🤜🤛 Solidarity, and rooting for you always!
I agree with your other readers, I so enjoy your newsletter, it is such a relief from everything else out there. Very happy you will keep writing and I look forward to hearing about your foray into the organic and/or regenerative farming world.
Oh, Lauren - thank you for this! I relate so much and also want to cultivate something on a local level. It's definitely inspiring me to think about how to make that happen over there. Also, I would miss your newsletter if you stopped writing, so very happy to hear you're keeping it going. ❤️
Thank you, Blair - and the feeling is mutual, I feel like I relate to all of your writing as of late! I'm so glad you joined Substack, even if it makes me a lil' nuts sometimes.

Thank you Will for the encouragement! Nice to know that other writers can relate.
