Most of us grew up during a time when having strong bones was equated with drinking lots (and lots) of cow’s milk. The ‘Got Milk?’ ads that filled magazines in the nineties and early aughts was one of the most memorable and recognizable campaigns in recent memory, featuring popular celebrities/athletes/models with prominent milk mustaches, telling us we need milk to be faster, stronger, skinnier and more beautiful. Doctors repeated this mantra: milk is necessary for growth! It is the source of calcium and Vitamin D. To this day, I am still asked at my daughters’ pediatric visits how many servings of milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream (lol!) they eat per day (interestingly, I’m never asked how many servings of vegetables they have).
